SimCity for mobile phones

SimCity

EA Mobile launches SimCity onto mobile phones. SimCity the old classic game that launched the simulation phenomenon has just made its way into mobile phones. SimCity is also my favorite game and I have spent a lot of times by playing the game yet. Thanks to Electronic Arts Inc., mobile phone users can now create and manage the growth of a living city in their mobile phones. It is bad news for me. I won’t stop playing the game :).

“SimCity is one of the most significant game franchises of the past 20 years and we’re thrilled to bring it to the mobile phone market,” said Travis Boatman, vice president worldwide studios, EA Mobile. “For the first time, players will have the ability to pick up and build a city while on the go – any time, any place.”

For people, who don’t know what SimCity is. The objective of SimCity is to build and design a city. The player can mark land as being zoned as commercial, industrial, or residential, add buildings, change the tax rate, build a power grid, build transportation systems and many other actions, in order to enhance the city.

Mobile gaming is ruined by controls

I’ve found an interresting article on the Abiro – Mobile News website. Anders Borg wrote there about how unuseable the mobile phones’ keypads are for mobile gaming. I absolutely agree with him. Most of the phones hasnt got some pressing-feedback (or how to call it). You’re never sure if you pressed the button or not. And that’s essential for playing games. The producers should think about that!

"Shake it baby!" on your mobile phone

Duke Nukem

Yes. It’s real! The classic of the classics – Duke Nukem enters your mobile phone! This game offers everything you were used to from good old DN 3D (except the 3D).

Let’s check what’s inside. The game is a well-done 2D/3D hybrid. The characters are 2D, but the enviroment is 3D. It reminds me a little of Golden Axe (old PC game with “pseudo 3D” enviroment). You never expect miracles from java games. Niether had I, but I was surprised. The playability don’t decline. In fact it’s rising with every killed beast.

For those who are used to RPG-like quests… you’ll be disappointed. The main thing in this game is shooting, shooting… and.. reloading ;)
The gameplay is based on the fact that you meet new beast (or found new type of gun) every ten to twelwe minutes. The beast are well known from original version. Pigs, those damned jetpack-equiped creatures and more. Some of them are new.

There are 15 levels. Each one is different. The number of guntypes is 10 (yes, same as DN 3D). The music is very good and makes a good atmosphere.

I would recomend this game to all those who were played (and loved) the old Duke. Others will find just another 2D/3D action game.

= Cons =

  • return of the legend ;)
  • not original
  • “just” action shooting
  • for someone can be boring

= Pros =

  • return of the legend
  • good music
  • well-done graphics
  • great gameplay experience

Women lead rush to mobile gaming

Do you believe that it can be true? Yes, two-thirds of the sales of mobile phone games are women, a US survey has revealed. According to the mobile research firm Telephia, female wireless subscribers make up 65% of mobile phone game revenue, but it is still more than men. It said that the “casual nature of mobile games provides tremendous appeal to women, who are not traditionally hardcore gamers”.

Games focused on puzzles and strategy generated the most revenue, the findings showed. The puzzle and strategy category represented 34% of total revenue and women accounted for 72% of that.

“The wireless industry has presented a hungry target audience willing to pay premium access to games through their mobile phones,” said Kanishka Agarwal, vice president of new products at Telephia.

The most popular four games fell into the puzzle and strategy category and included Tetris, Tetris Deluxe, Bejeweled and Jamdat Mahjong – which contributed 13.6% of mobile phone game revenue in total.

Reality in Virtuality

New generation of mobile games – Mobile AR. The abbreviation AR goes for Augmented Reality. The pioneer of this technology was the Mosquito. These games are based on the fact, that nearly every mobile phone has integrated camera. The image is taken from the camera, passed to the game engine and finally adjusted accoding to the movements of the phone. See the example with ping-pong table.
